Photographs

I thought you might enjoy some of the photographs that I used in the Digital Media Project 2. I am also including some photographs which, sadly, I didn't feel would add to the project, but still hold a lot of meaning. I hope you enjoy!

“WAAC and ASTP Students.” 1944. Digital Collections: Historic ET Collection. Jpg. January 30, 2014. [Fair Use]
This cute couple was standing outside of the movie theatre in downtown Commerce, Texas when this photo was taken. The poster on the wall behind them says "Pattern for Invasion" and is a reminder of the time period in which they were living.

"ASTP Students in Class" Historic ET Collection, Northeast Texas Digital Collections, James G. Gee Library. Texas A&M University-Commerce. 1943 or 1944. [Fair Use].
Young men who were in the ASTP  (Army Specialized Training Program) had to take different courses. Unfortunately this photo was automatically trimmed when I saved it to my computer, so part of one of the cadet's face has been cut off.

"ASTP Cadet Napping in Jeep" Historic ET Collection, Northeast Texas Digital Collections, James G. Gee Library, Texas A&M University-Commerce. 1943. [Fair Use].
It's a little difficult to tell, but there is a sleeping cadet in the Jeep.

“ASTP Students with Resting Lion.” 1944. Digital Collections: Historic ET Collection. Jpg. January 30, 2014. [Fair Use].
Behind where these cadets were standing are now sorority dormitories. The resting lion is still there, with Ferguson auditorium behind the lion and a parking lot in front of him. The Resting Lion was donated to the school by the East Texas State Teachers College, Class of 1929.

"Barr, Hoyle R., 1917-2009; WWII  Navy fighter" c. 1942-1944. Digital Collections: Historic ET Collection. Jpg. April 18, 2014.

"Flag Ceremony 1944" Historic ET Collection, Northeast Texas Digital Collections, James G. Gee Library, Texas A&M University-Commerce. 1944. [Fair Use]

"Jubilant crowd with ticker tape on V-J day, Washington, D.C." Prints and Photographs Online Catalog (PPOC). Library of Congress. 1945. [Public Domain].
This image was retrieved from the Library of Congress. When I tried to save it the image remained small and it was blurry on the video, so I decided not to use it for the video. It is a photo of people celebrating the end of World War II.

"Draftees Leaving Mt. Vernon, 1942" Historical ET Collection, Northeast Texas Digital Collections, James G. Gee Library, Texas A&M University-Commerce, 1942. [Fair Use].
Mt. Vernon, Texas is located about an hour and a half northeast of Dallas.

"Give 'em the stuff to fight with" Historical ET Collection, Northeast Texas Digital Collections, James G. Gee Library, Texas A&M University-Commerce. 1942. [Fair Use].
Propaganda poster encouraging people to purchase war bonds.

"Serve on the farm home front" Jan 1943. U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Agricultural Library. Archive.org. Jpg. April 18 2014. [Public Domain].
I found this image because it was the only one that had to do with rationing which was also available on a credible site. Unfortunately it was still very blurry on the video. I believe it is from a pamphlet that encouraged people to help the war effort.

"Hall, Charles Clifton; (right) and his buddy" c. 1945. Digital Collections: Historic ET Collection. Jpg. April 18, 2014.

"Unknown Parade - Terrell Floral Float" c. 1943. Digital Collections: Historic ET Collection. Jpg. April 18, 2014.
Terrell, Texas is located 35 minutes away from Dallas, Texas. The city of Terrell was one of many cities that had a victory parade.

"Church Parade - No. 1 BFTS" c. 1943. Digital Collections: Historic ET Collection. Jpg. April 18, 2014.
This military parade took place in Terrell, Texas.

"World War II Victory Parade" Historic ET Collection. Northeast Texas Digital Collections, James G. Gee Library, Texas A&M University-Commerce. 08/1945. [Fair Use].
This victory parade took place in downtown Commerce, Texas.

Naomi Webb, 1919-2008. She grew up in Belott, TX, later moved to Tyler, TX, where she lived the remainder of her life. Mother to Wendell and Joel Webb. She was married to Melbourn Webb on September 1st, 1939, the day that World War II began. They divorced in 1956, when their eldest son, Wendell, was 10 years old. Melbourn Webb served in Normandy, France; Africa; and Italy. He was discharged in 1945 for firing his weapon in protest of an assignment given by an immediate superior.

Verniece and Buster. Verniece was Melbourn Webb's sister and married Buster.

The woman in the center is my great-grandmother, Naomi Webb. I don't know who the men are in this photograph.

Naomi Webb

The photos below are from the crumbling old photo album that my great-grandmother created. The photos are from the mid-1940s to the early 1950s. Seeing as how just flipping through the pages caused them to flake apart, I thought it best not to scan each page into the computer and instead took photos of most of the pages. A lot of photos are missing, and all the photos of her ex-husband, Melburn, have been removed, though the description remains.
